  Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A SEPTIC TANK?
A septic tank is designed to hold human waste and through anaerobic action break it

down to sludge, which separates into fats, which gathers at the top of the tank to form a

mat, water and carbon dioxide that are then released into the drain field.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT KIND OF TANK IS THE BEST?
Concrete septic tanks are considered to be the best. Metal and fiberglass tanks tend to

rust and deteriorate over time. If the proper tank is installed correctly and maintained, it

  will last a long time.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN AND SERVICE YOUR SEPTIC TANK?
If the septic tank is not serviced or pumped, the sludge will build up and get very thick.

Then the sludge will go out into the lateral or leach lines.

When these lines get clogged up, they are very expensive to replace. Also, the septic tank

will fill up and with no place else to go, it will back up into the house.

Think of it this way, a septic tank is no different than anything else that we use and needs

to be maintained. We would never think about leaving the same oil in our car engines,

would we? The septic tank fluids need to be drained and replaced as well.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I PUMP MY TANK?

It is recommended that a 1,000 gallon septic tank, with four people in the home, should

be pumped every three years. Smaller tanks should be pumped more often. It all comes

down to usage. For example, if a septic tank is used more often because of company

gatherings, then it should be pumped more often.

WHY IS TAKING CARE OF OUR SEPTIC TANK IMPORTANT TO THOSE WHO COME

  AFTER US?
Properly maintaining your septic tank is important to your environment and the people

around you. When the sludge builds up and gets into the lateral around you, and the

field, there’s a good chance it may get absorbed into the groundwater. And that can affect

our whole community and even the next generation of property owners.

HOW DO I FIND A GOOD COMPANY TO PUMP MY TANK?
Find someone that uses proper equipment and methods that will ensure your satisfaction.

The sludge should be stirred or broken up.

They should remove all that can possibly be removed, and that means getting it out of

the corners and areas where it may be harder to reach. Also, beware of a company that

comes to pump your tank with a small tank, 500 gallons or less. They most likely won’t

get it all and/or will want to charge you extra to come back to pump the rest.

WHAT CAN I DO TO TAKE CARE OF MY SEPTIC TANK?
Use only the kind of toilet paper that is recommended for septic tanks. Also, limit the

amount you flush into your tank. Make sure that nothing except human waste, the

recommended toilet paper and bacteria build-up-products are put into your tank.
